Two new water storage tanks signal a climate-resilient future for the sister isle of Carriacou, Grenada

Transforming water security and empowering the island to face the future, one drop at a time

The sisterisle of Carriacou, Grenada is set to see major improvements in its access to potable water. Excavation works are currently ongoing on the 2 sites, which will each have a 100,000 -gallon (400 cubic metres) water storage tank. The works follow a sod turning ceremony held earlier this year to signal the commencement of work.

Traditionally, Carriacou has relied on rainwater harvesting for most of its potable water, with approximately 5% desalinated water supplied by the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) – the lone water company in the tri-island state.

These climate-resilient tanks will store and supply potable water to residents during disasters. Improvements in water storage capacity are taking place at a critical time, especially for the island which experienced 90% devastation from the impact of Hurricane Beryl in July 2024.

Acting General Manager of the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) Ms. Dennies Burris welcomed the additional storage capacity while reflecting on the threat of Hurricane Beryl to the vital reserves.

She said “just as water connects us all—Grenada to Carriacou, and NAWASA to every home and community it serves—NAWASA is proud to strengthen that connection in ways that will transform lives on the island for generations to come.”

Head of Project for GIZ G-CREWS, Ms. Marion Geiss emphasized that the tank is more than a piece of infrastructure but rather a symbol of collective responsibility to protect and manage water resources wisely for future generations.

Parliamentary Representative for the sisterisle of Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Honourable Tevin Andrews welcomed the improvements in the water supply system that will happen because of the additional water storage tanks.

The construction of the 2 water storage tanks is part of a larger investment which includes the laying of over 6 kilometers of new pipelines to further boost Carriacou’s water supply capacity, directly benefiting more than 4,500 people.

The tanks are 2 out of a total of 8 being constructed under the Climate-Resilient Water Sector in Grenada (G-CREWS) project. The transformative project is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under its International Climate Initiative (IKI), and the Government of Grenada. Its’ overall aim is to build climate resilience within the water sector in Grenada.
